A couple of advantages of a user name are that you pick it (rather than having a number assigned to you) and you can make it shorter than the 14 digits of a library card number (easier to type). The social features of the catalog are more social when users have names rather than numbers.
You do not have to log in with your user name after you create it. You can continue to use your 14-digit card number if you prefer.
